Privacy
Work created by students may contain (privacy) sensitive information. Both Turnitin and Ouriginal comply with Utrecht University’s privacy and security requirements. This means for example that all submitted information can only be used for plagiarism detection (and therefore not for other purposes), and that data is stored in Europe.
If you suspect your assignment or thesis may contain (privacy) sensitive information:
-
- Discuss this with your teacher.
- Submit your document in Brightspace or the Web Inbox, rather than by email.
- In the Ouriginal Web Inbox you can change the ‘exemption status’ of your document. An ‘exempted’ document will be used as a source for plagiarism detection (and is thereby protected against plagiarism), but the contents of the document will not be visible to others.
- When submitting a document to Turnitin, it is possible to have the document excluded from the database, this always needs to be discussed with your teacher first. Another option is to anonymize the document and remove any confidential details before submitting, this always needs to be discussed with your teacher first
More information about document exemptions can be found at FAQ 21. Exempting documents
