Similarity check

Teachers: Use within Brightspace (new)

Starting period 3 / semester 2, we will be using a different plagiarism detection software named OriginalityCheck by Turnitin.

Turnitin, is available in Brightspace as an integration of the Brightspace Assignment. Within the Content area of the course, go to Create New and choose Assignment. From here you can turn on plagiarism detection, as described in the steps below.

Most of the settings do not affect Turnitin. Circled in the image below are the settings that do have an impact.

The Due Date date may affect when the report is generated. This can be set in a later step.

Submission & Completion

The “Submission Type” must be a File submission or Text submission.

Under “Allowable File Extensions”, Compatible with Turnitin must be selected.

Evaluation & Feeback

At the bottom under “Evaluation & Feedback” click on Manage Turnitin.

When you click on that you will be presented with a screen with two options to be: ‘Similarity Report’ and ‘Online Grading’. ‘Online grading’ is not something we use.

Click on the checkbox next to ‘Enable Similarity Report for this folder’.

Leave ‘Display’, ‘Allow learners to see similarity scores in their submission folder’ unchecked.

Leave ‘Submissions Checked’ set to ‘Automatic similarity checking on all submissions’.
See image below

If you press save Turnitin will be enabled for this assignment with the recommended settings.

If you whish to change some settings you can do so in More options, see following image.

At ‘Similarity Report’ you can set when the report will be generated:

  • Immediately generate a report
  • Generate report on de ‘Due date’ which you have set in de assignement.

Please note: the dropdown gives you the option for ‘Generate reports immediatly’ to allow and not allow resubmit, this does not work. Of a resubmit is or is not allowed is set in the Brightspace assignement. This choice overwrites the option you choose, when you choose ‘generate immediatly’.

‘Similarity Report’ lets you specify which materials and sources you want to include or exclude.

Klik op submit en daarna op save Turnitin is ingeschakeld.

At ‘Compare against’ you have the option to exclude with which the assignment is compared.

At ‘Exclude assignment template’ you can create/upload a template that will not be included in the similarity report.

Finally, at the bottom there is a checkbox with ‘Save these settings for future use’. This does not work ufortunatly, but can not be removed from this screen.

Click submit and then save. Turnitin is enabled.

Note: Did you forget to turn on Turnitin and did student already submit assignements, do the following:

  • Turn on Turnitin, so new assignments will be analysed on plagarism
  • For assignements whiched have been submitted before Turnitin was turned on; go to these assignements and click on the post box. These assignments will then be sent to Turnitin.
